One "gone"

Saturday Tom and I cleaned out the coop, Steve put up the fencing, and we moved the chicks in. All seemed to be going well until today. I looked out and saw a hawk on the gravel with a bird in its claws, pulling feathers out. I got my binoculars and it looked like a quail. I went out to take a picture but the hawk flew off with its prey. Several sparrows and other birds chased and harassed it on its way.
So I went on out to the coop and went in only to have a sparrow zip past me and hit the window. It went down stunned, not moving, and the hens stared and started towards it. I scooped it up and put it on the fence post outside, then went back in to check the chicks. They were under the roosts behind the fence and seemed to all be there. (It is hard to count 20 of them when they are bunched-up or running around like crazy).

Then this evening I look out and Bingo is laying by the sidewalk with something between her paws. So I go out to look and its a chick, all wet from being carried over. After telling Bingo no, bad dog, I take the chick and put it back in the coop. Steve seems to think that Bingo found it outside the coop and brought it to me.

So I went to lock-up the coop, counted the chicks - just 19. I guess the hawk didn't get a quail and maybe Bingo did find one outside. Hopefully the hawk and Bingo haven't learned to go inside the coop.
